Unpacking Efforts To Recall Mayor Wilson, Black Nerd Magic, and Hawaiian Shave Ice That’s Worth the Line
Today on the podcast, fill-in host Marcus Harrison Green talks to Michael Peterson, one of the organizers behind the Seattle Black Nerd Festival, a celebration of Black creativity, curiosity, fandom, and imagination. The two swap nerd credentials, discuss the importance of spaces where Black nerdiness can be celebrated in all its forms, and what booking Boots Riley as the keynote speaker meant for the festival. Then, contributor Eula Scott Bynoe and guest Charles Douglas III join Marcus to discuss the petition filed this week to recall Mayor Katie Wilson. Marcus asks what it means that the petition has received so much media coverage, outweighing its actual political momentum, and Charles points to a sexist trend in the Seattle politicians who most often receive recall petitions.
