Hi Seattle! Sam here. Pour one out for the Bellingham rock. It died a noble death, clearing the way for a fish passage restoration project. If you would like to claim a piece of the stoney message board for your own personal archive, WSDOT will apparently distribute pieces of the rock to those interested.

Today's Must-Know

The Historic Chinatown Gate, also known as a paifang, is a 45-foot-tall landmark in Seattle's Chinatown-International District, located on S King Street and 5th Avenue S, with red pillars and a gold roof and a dragon curled around the telephone pole on the left.

What To Do for AANHPI Month

May is Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and the International Examiner has assembled a list of free events to celebrate our region’s rich cultures, histories, and communities. The list written by Theo Bickel covers more than just Seattle, but below are a few within the city. [International Examiner]

  • 🥊 Mega Mahjong and Mini Market: On May 16, Emerald City Tile Club is bringing their mahjong social to Seattle Boxing Gym for a game played with huge mahjong tiles in a boxing ring. Kimchi Craft Collective is also organizing a mini market full of local vendors, and they will also have regular-sized mahjong tables. There is a $5 suggested donation to attend. [More info here]
  • 🕺🏽 Dance Party and Walk For Rice: On May 17, Balik2bayan creative collective is hosting a pop-up dance party with a great lineup of DJs at Mixed Pantry – where I bought the tastiest dashi-infused rice vinegar I’ve ever had. And 10% of all sales will go to supporting Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS). Also on May 17, ACRS Food Bank is hosting its annual fundraiser walk and celebration at Seward Park. Attendees can register and donate online or just show up. [2026 Walk For Rice]
  • 🌈 Pride ASIA Fest: On May 24, Pride ASIA Fest is coming back for its 14th year at Hing Hay Park. It’s a free and all-ages event with performances, music, and a community fair. And of course, founder and local icon Aleksa Manila will be hosting. [More info here]

What Seattle’s Talking About

🤖 Ransomware attack: Students across the state lost access to Canvas, an online course management platform, after a ransomware attack by a group called ShinyHunters, which claims it has data for students at nearly 9,000 institutions. UW, Seattle Colleges, WSU, and others removed access to Canvas following the attack, but the hackers are threatening to release data unless the schools negotiate a settlement. 🏈 Potential new Seahawks owners: The first substantiated reports of bids to buy our NFL team arrived late last week. Aditya Mittal, an investor in the group that bought the Boston Celtics, and Wyc Grousbeck, the former lead owner of the Celtics, are preparing a bid. Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a minority owner of the San Francisco 49ers, is also “prepping a bid.” [Sportico]

🍺 Sam’s Tavern says goodbye: After 13 years, owner James Snyder is closing the Capitol Hill restaurant on the corner of 11th Avenue and East Pike Street. Long-time patrons came through over the weekend to say goodbye to the tavern, which was designed as a tribute to the original 1940s-era Sam’s Tavern. It sounds like, according to CHS Blog, it may reopen under new ownership. [KING 5]

Lime’s newest bike model has hit the streets. GeekWire has a review of the design, which is supposed to be more accessible for people with less pedal power (relatable). Have you tried them yet? Reply with your thoughts!
